Empowering Vulnerable Individuals through Training and Employment Opportunities
This isn’t a traditional FBTS post, but it’s worthy of getting its own spotlight. The work being done by Blue Door Shelter through their ‘Construct’ program is making a huge difference for people experiencing homelessness.
We believe in supporting initiatives that create positive change in our communities, and ‘Construct’ is a perfect example.
I met with Michael and Emma from Blue Door last week and was shocked by the effectiveness of their ‘Construct’ training program. So much so, I needed to share:
The ‘Construct’ program is a proven solution to homelessness and poverty.
The ‘Construct’ program is a proven solution to homelessness and poverty.
Construct is a skilled trades training program that propels vulnerable individuals into training with wraparound supports and on-the-job work experience, leading them to well-paid careers in construction trades:
8-week full-time training
The program targets an untapped and largely ignored demographic and provides an 8-week full-time training, focusing on employability, soft and hard skills, and various trades.
Develop skills and explore career pathways
Participants receive certifications, and basic PPE, along with employment readiness modules to develop skills and explore career pathways.
Hands-on training
Construct offers hands-on training at the Construct Training Centre and with partners like LiUNA Local 506, Humber College, and Durham College.
An intensive recruitment process
An intensive recruitment process ensures participants are a good fit, and they receive individualized wellness and goal setting plans, along with direct connections to employment and education opportunities post-program.
Impressive Program Achievements Since 2020:
Over 50 cohorts have been delivered
Training received by over 450 individuals
98% completion rate
80% finding stable employment within 6 months
